140218-LL-084FAIRFAX, Va. — (PRWeb) — Educational Connections founder and independent school expert Ann Dolin recently appeared in the February 23 issue of the Washington Post Magazine offering tips to families applying to private schools in the Washington DC area. Drawing from her recently released book, A Guide to Private Schools: The Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland Edition, Dolin discusses the importance of not just identifying target schools but customizing an admissions preparation strategy for those specific schools.

Through Educational Connections, Dolin’s 200 highly credentialed tutors provide in-home academic tutoring, test prep and educational coaching to students in Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland. “For years, parents have come to us for help shoring up grades or preparing for the SSAT private school entrance exams,” Dolin explains. “From this experience we’ve gained first-hand insights into what the area’s private schools are looking for and how much can be done to improve a student’s chances of getting accepted at a particular school.”

In addition to advice on how to find the “best fit” school for each student, Dolin shares common mistakes that can work against a child’s success. Dolin reveals: “Sometimes parents have one school in mind that they view as ‘perfect.’ All their energy goes into getting their child into that single place.” Plus, she cautions, “Don’t equate low acceptance rates with superior quality. Look beyond the acceptance rate to the mission of the school and the strength of its academic program.”
