Students need to really understand the fundamentals, things like atomic structure, bonding, and stoichiometry, before the more advanced material starts to make sense. The vocabulary load is another real challenge. Words like electronegativity, enthalpy, molarity, and Le Chatelier's Principle aren't just terms to memorize. Students have to understand them well enough to actually use them, and that takes time.
