Reading Intervention

Reading Intervention is a specialized one-on-one reading tutoring instruction for students who are having difficulty with decoding, fluency, comprehension, and/or spelling and writing.  Our reading tutor instructors work with students using research-based programs to remediate reading problems and instill confidence. These programs are systematic in nature so that emerging fluency is supported and strengthened by the preceding skills mastered through each step of the process.

Did you know that up to 20% of students struggle with reading acquisition or fluency?  These students often need a structured and multi-sensory approach to remediate their weaknesses.  Our Washington DC reading tutors are trained in specific programs validated by research, such as:

•    Orton-Gillingham
•    S.P.I.R.E.
•    Wilson Reading System
•    Phono-Graphix
•    Read Naturally
•    LindaMood Bell
•    Great Leaps
•    Rewards
•    Jamestown

Assessments
Students that would benefit from Reading Intervention may need a baseline assessment to help establish the underlying cause of difficulty in reading, writing, and/or spelling.  We offer full reading evaluations to determine the student's strengths and weaknesses and the intervention program that will best remediate skill deficits.  These assessments also provide a point of reference from which to measure future progress.

Monitoring Progress
Students receiving Reading Intervention are closely monitored throughout their program.  Before beginning sessions, we consult with the students' selected reading tutor to determine the appropriate program and instructional techniques.  After approximately 25 to 30 hours, we recommend that the student be briefly retested to assess progress.  Informal and formal feedback is given to parents on a weekly basis by the reading tutor. Studies show that students make the most gains with intensive instruction that is consistent; therefore, we require Reading Intervention at least two times each week.
